We are aware of the recent “Tips From a Former Smoker” campaign by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (Center for Disease Control), and have responded directly to that organization this past week. Based on the CDC’s response to not remove or alter the advertisements, you will find hyperlinks to their scare-tactic based commercials that are posted all over the internet and on their website.
With that being said, we feel that it is important for you to see the videos and REACH OUT to your elected officials, and the CDC directly, so that this organization has a firm grasp on how these surgical procedures have POSITIVELY impacted peoples’ lives, and how offensively (and inaccurately) the “bag” (pouch/appliance) is portrayed, and then spread to millions of people online and on T.V. through these videos.
UOAA is committed to advocating for all people who have had or who may have ostomy or continent diversion surgery. We join with the ostomy community in speaking out when others use this life-saving surgical procedure as a scare tactic.
While we agree that reducing the risk factors for colorectal cancer is important, the CDC’s inadvertently discriminatory campaign works against UOAA’s vision of a society where people with ostomies and intestinal or urinary diversions are universally accepted and supported socially, economically, medically, and psychologically.
Don’t miss Wednesday’s meeting! Our speaker is John Burke of Byram Healthcare. Bring your questions! Hope to see you at 7 pm at Gilda’s Club!
